Radio Technology of 1930

Radios in the 1930s were not small boxes that we are used to today. They were built into a large wooden box that would then be a piece of furniture in homes. The reason why radios were so large was because the first models were made with vacuum tubes on the inside. Large radios typically had large speakers that provided a rich bass, but they also had an antenna drum with several loops of large wires that served as an adjustable antenna. By 1935 22 million Americans had a radio in their home and automobiles were starting to have the built in.
